Drawing Parallels

I see that the San Francisco Chronicle hasn't stopped churning out inane trash just because I stopped reading it.

"In many parts of the world, women wear burqas so that their true identity and features may be concealed. "

While it is indeed true that burqas (or burkas) do conceal a woman's true identity and features, there exists another motivation for wearing them that might be worth mentioning: women caught not wearing one would be stoned or beaten, even to death. This quaint little truth is unworthy of mention.

"Cosmetics is but another word for a burqa. Walk into any supermarket or drugstore in America and visit the cosmetics department. There, you will find hundreds, if not thousands, of items (lipstick, eyeliner, mascara, nail polish) intended to conceal the true features of an endless stream of women consumers. "

James Taranto sums it up nicely:
"And you've no doubt heard about all the American women who've been beaten, or even stoned to death, for appearing in public without their lipstick or eye shadow."
