It might have been easier to count votes or reach some sort of compromise with dissenting Democrats, but the governor's political style copies boxer Joe Frazier's: beat the hell out the other guy. Democrats note correctly that the Legislature had its chance to pass a redistricting bill in 2001 session, but abdicated the chore to the courts. That's exactly where this mess is going to end up after some very expensive head-knocking.
Democrats noted this? Did they also bother noting that they were in the majority in the 2001 legislative session and that any abdication was their doing?
As an aside, perhaps the Statesman editors could lighten up a bit and let us know how they really feel about Rick Perry. From the way they editorialize, it's hard to tell.

This upstanding paragon of morality and pillar of the community undoubtedly earned his $92k/year for "administrating" before his arrests. How dare those evil bastards fire this professional!

The nuts would appear to be of a cannibalistic sort. (No pun intended.) We have SF chefs, which are probably raving, drooling libs for the most part, being harassed by radical, frothing, vegetarian libs. And harassed not by mere words, but by actual destruction of property, as well as death threats.
