I've been instructed that I must blog. I've even been threatened with being deprived of one of my daily (well, almost daily)distractions. And as my readers well know, distraction is of the utmost importance. Hence, this new post has been created. Now I could be sneaky and just stop here, post this nonsense, and declare the task completed, but I'm not going to do that. I'm going to talk about the fat people that object to Southwest Airlines' cruel, discriminatory policy of not handing out free seats every single time they choose to fly.
I'm not providing any links, but I know that there are plenty out there. For it was my watching of "Airline" on A&E that has prompted my discussion of this issue. Or, rather, this non-issue.
I certainly agree that it would suck to have to be required to buy two plane tickets for a single person for a single flight. But it is absolutely not discriminatory or anything remotely insidious. What it is, is fair. In fact, I think Southwest goes above and beyond with their willingness to refund the price of the second ticket if the flight isn't full. I say above and beyond, because the person of size still had the use of both seats during the flight, but through luck, they only have to pay for one. It only makes sense that passengers should pay for the number of seats they use. If two people take up two seats, then they should buy two tickets. If one person takes up two seats, then that person should buy two tickets. Same thing if one person takes up three seats. Why this has to be turned into something to litigate over is beyond me. If anyone has a right to litigate, it's the person who buys one seat, occupies only that one seat, but finds themself sitting next to an inconsiderate fool that takes up a seat and a half, and thus must spend the flight squeezed unnaturally into only half of the seat they purchased. To not compensate the smaller person for being involuntarily deprived of part of a seat that they paid for is unconscionable. But there's no reason the airline should have to absorb this cost. The problem can be solved in a fair and equitable manner by simply having people who take up more than one seat buy more than one seat. This isn't rocket science.
But getting back to that deranged fat chick on Airline last night, I heartily disapprove of the way those ticket agents treated her. They were far too nice and accomodating, even after it became apparent that she was completely unreasonable. They went out of their way to try to help her, and all she could do was threaten to sue for discrimination. After they refunded her full ticket price (which they did immediately), they should have had security remove her from the area. There was no need for them to sit there listening to an extended rant from a person that no longer even had a ticket. Even if she had bought both tickets, she shouldn't have been allowed to fly at that point as she was still far too belligerent to be put in a flying metal tube full of other human beings. She was even demanding that they give her cash, instead of merely crediting the card used to book the flight. What planet is she from?
