NEW ORLEANS - President Bush returned Tuesday to the city hit hardest by Hurricane Katrina one year ago to the day, accepted full blame for the federal government's failures in its early recovery efforts and implored its citizens to come home.
Huh? New Orleans wasn't even the hardest hit city in Louisiana. That unwanted distinction would go to Buras, or Empire, or some other place far to the south of the Crescent City. The hardest hit city was without a doubt located somewhere in Hancock county. This statement (and most of what's been on TV this week) is a great testament to the utter ignorance regarding Katrina and New Orleans. It is absolutely disgusting.
On a more positive note, there are intelligent people in the world, and some of them say things like this:
"There is one thing that has grated on my nerves for months. That’s people blaming the federal government for what happened in New Orleans. I have a little, unnoted fact to bring to people’s attention: Mississippi has the same federal government as Louisiana. Texas has the same federal government. Alabama has the same federal government, and Florida has the same federal government. If what happened in New Orleans was the federal government’s fault, why didn’t it happen in Mississippi, Texas, Alabama or Florida? It does chap me to see the Northeastern and West Coast news media blame the federal government, when all these other states, including Mississippi, recognize that it’s our responsibility. We are the first line of defense and the first-responders. "
