About a week ago we all heard that Laura Bush had a squamous cell carcinoma, ie skin cancer, removed from her shin. And for some reason, we are still hearing about it. Apparently there is some outrage among the media because "the White House failed to disclose" this tidbit to the self-appointed masters of the universe and was kept "hidden", "secretly", etc. This illustrates just how completely detached from reality many (if not most) members of the mainstream media are. Was this really a "failure" to disseminate relevant information? Never mind the fact that the first lady is under NO OBLIGATION WHATSOEVER to disclose her private medical information - she did just that upon being asked, which is hardly secretive. She would have been well within her rights to say she'd rather not discuss it when she was rudely asked about the bandage on her leg. I'm all in favor of reporters bugging the crap out of public officials and digging up their dirt, but this hysteria shows that the media will fabricate scandals constantly with no basis in fact whatsoever. Is Laura Bush really expected to share every bit of health-related news she can think of? Should a press conference be called the next morning if she forgets to floss one night? Do these journalist fools really expect a phone call if she almost slips on the bathroom floor, but doesn't? Is any incident requiring the application of a Band-Aid so vital that it is unthinkable not to make it public?
Let's look at this another way: Laura Bush gets biopsy, learns diagnosis, and calls a press conference to announce to the world that she has a very common, almost never life-threatening form of skin cancer, that was caught early and easily removed in a quick in-office procedure, and required the use of a Band-Aid. Would this not have been met with shrieking idiots objecting to the First Lady wasting their "precious" time (time which is obviously so worthless as to actually have negative value)? Of course it would have, and not one person would be better off because of it. This just illustrates that the Bushes are held to a higher standard than anyone else and that absolutely nothing they do will be good enough for the whiners.
